FIRSTLY, FOR MANY SUPERCOMPUTING APLICATIONS THE LIMITING FACTOR IS NOT THE NUMBER OF AVAILABLE CPUS ANYMORES, BUT THE BANDWIDTH OF THE DISK 1/0 SYSTEM. SECONDLY, A SHIFT FROM THE CLASSICAL, COSTLY SUPERMCOMPUTER SYSTEMS TO AFFORDABLE CLUSTERS OF WORKSTATIONS IS APPARENT, WHICH ALLOWS PROBLEM SOLUTIONS TO A MUCH LOWER PRICE. AS RESULT WE PRESENT IN THIS PAPER THE VIENNA PARALLET INPUT OUTPUT SYSTEM (VIPIOS), WHICH HARNESSES 1/0 RESOURCES AVAILABLE IN CLOUSTER TYPE SYSTEMS FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE ( PARLLED AND/ OR DISTRIBUTED) APPLICATIONS. VIPIOS IS A CLIENTSERVER BASED SYSTEM TO EXECUTION SCHEME. IT FOLLOWS A DATA ENGINEERING APPROACH BY COMBINING CHARACTERISTICS OF PARALLEL 1/0 RUNTIME LIBRARIES AND PARALLEL FILE SYSTEMS WITH A SMART ADMINISTRATION MODULES.
